Why Are 30×30, 32×32, 36×36, and 40×40 Options Limited?

European manufacturers tend to favor 24×48 tiles over 30×30, 32×32, and 36×36 formats. The 24×48 size is already larger than 30×30 and 32×32, and because the design can flow along the 48-inch length, it can create a more subtle appearance than a 36×36 square format. 40×40 is also very close in scale to 48×48, so rather than creating and maintaining a separate production line for 40×40, many manufacturers prefer to focus on the more established 48×48 size.

How About Large Rectangular Tiles Like 30×60, 32×63, and 36×72?

Large rectangular formats such as 30×60, 32×63, and 36×72 are an interesting category because they can create a more slab-like appearance across the surface compared with large square formats such as 48×48. Depending on their existing production lines, some factories produce 30×60, while others use 32×63 as their large rectangular format. 36×72 is less common because its 72-inch length is 9 inches longer than 63 inches, which, with possible exceptions we may not yet be aware of, is the largest size primarily manufactured as a flooring tile. Producing the larger 36×72 format therefore requires additional investment that many factories choose to avoid..

Why Is 32×32 Tile Size Not Very Common Among European Manufacturers?

European porcelain manufacturers primarily work with metric production sizes. Common formats follow established metric increments, such as 15 cm, 30 cm, 45 cm, 60 cm, 75 cm, 90 cm, and 120 cm, which are commonly marketed in the U.S. as approximately 6″, 12″, 18″, 24″, 30″, 36″, and 48″. A 32×32 tile corresponds to an 80×80 cm format, which falls outside this common progression. For that reason, 32×32 has never become as widely established among European porcelain manufacturers as sizes such as 24×24, 30×30, 36×36, or 48×48.

How Flat are 30×60, 32×63, and 36×72 tiles?

Because of their long rectangular shape, flatness becomes especially important with 30×60, 32×63, and 36×72 tiles. As the length of the tile increases, even a small amount of bowing becomes more noticeable and can make installation more difficult. Before choosing one of these formats, it is important to check the flatness of the actual tile, rather than assuming that every large rectangular porcelain tile will perform the same way.
