Are 63×63 Tiles Too Large for Residential Spaces?
No. The size of the room does not determine the size of the tile you can use. People installing 63×63 tiles do not necessarily have 63-inch-wide hallways or enormous rooms. Larger tiles simply mean fewer grout lines and a more continuous surface. Correct tile placement requires basic math and some planning regardless of tile size to avoid awkward cuts along the walls.
6mm or 8mm Thick?
With 63×63 porcelain tiles, thickness can make a major difference in installation. A 6mm tile requires an extremely flat, nearly laser-level substrate. In practice, that level of flatness may not always be achieved even with self-leveling products, which can increase the risk of cracking after installation. Cutting 6mm tiles also requires much more care and is best handled by a fabricator. An 8mm 63×63 tile is much more forgiving and can generally be installed in the same way as other large-format porcelain tiles.
What Else Should I Know About the Installation of 63×63 Tiles?
63×63 tiles should be handled by at least two people because of their size and weight. We also recommend using suction cups when lifting, moving, positioning, and setting the tiles. The installer should be comfortable working with very large-format porcelain and have the proper tools to handle and position the tile safely during installation.
