24×48 Tile Guide: What to Know Before You Buy

24×48 porcelain tile is one of the most practical large-format sizes, offering fewer grout lines without the handling and the additional product and installation cost of 48×48 tiles.

24×48 tiles offer a good balance between the cleaner appearance of large-format tile and practical installation. They create fewer grout lines than traditional tile sizes while being easier to handle and generally less expensive to purchase and install than larger formats such as 48×48.

Yes. The designs on 24×48 tiles are planned to flow along the 48-inch length of the tile. This design approach allows the pattern to spread across a longer surface, resulting in a less busy appearance compared with more square formats such as 30×30, 32×32, and 36×36 tiles.

While stacked installation is the most common layout for 24×48 tiles, staggering the tiles can add another design element to the overall look of the floor.

Including 24×48 tiles, rectangular porcelain and ceramic tiles should be staggered using a 1/3 offset. Because tiles tend to bow at the same point along their length, a 1/2 offset can place the highest point of one tile next to the lowest point of another, creating a wavy appearance across the floor. For that reason, a 1/3 stagger is the recommended layout.
