Materia Steel is a distinctive porcelain slab inspired by the character of an aged dark grey metal sheet. Subtle rust-like markings, tonal variation, and its semi-polished surface create a weathered industrial appearance with considerably more depth and character than a typical solid grey surface.
What makes Materia Steel especially interesting is how difficult its look is to categorize. It can work in spaces where a designer might normally consider a dark concrete-look surface, yet it does not imitate concrete. Instead, its aged-metal appearance gives the space a more individual architectural character. The result is contemporary and industrial without looking ordinary or predictable.
This is one of those surfaces that tends to make a much stronger impression in person. The combination of dark grey tones, aged details, and subtle rust effects gives Materia Steel a unique style that is not easy to come across in conventional porcelain tile collections. At only 3 mm thick, Materia Steel is an ultra-thin porcelain slab with mesh reinforcement on the back for additional support during handling and installation. Its extra-large format creates broad, uninterrupted surfaces with very few grout lines, allowing the design itself to become the focal point.
Materia Steel is particularly well suited to feature walls, shower walls, bathroom walls, fireplace surrounds, and other architectural surfaces where the goal is to create something different from a conventional stone, marble, or concrete look. It can also be an interesting alternative for projects originally considering a concrete-look tile but looking for something with more personality.
Because of its unusual surface and semi-polished finish, photographs cannot fully reproduce the depth, tonal changes, and aged-metal character of the slab. Seeing Materia Steel in person provides a much better sense of what makes this design distinctive.
I think “it can substitute for a concrete look, but it isn’t one” is actually an excellent positioning concept for this product. It lets you capture that design audience without misrepresenting what the slab looks like.
Where to Use This Tile, and How Tile Finishes Work
Standard matte, satin, and polished finishes usually have similar slip-resistance levels unless the tile is specifically rated as an In & Out or Grip finish.
For pool areas, a Grip finish is preferred. For outdoor areas that may get wet, an In & Out finish is usually the better choice. However, any wet surface can become slippery depending on the angle, speed, amount of water, and how the area is used, so caution is always required.
A DCOF rating above 0.42 is considered the beginning level of slip resistance. Tiles with more surface friction usually attract more dirt and dust, which is why they are generally preferred for outdoor areas.
