Questions

Understanding Porcelain Tile Quality

First quality” is commonly used when selling porcelain tile, but did you know that you can verify much of what you are told simply by checking the factory boxes?

Check the original factory box. Manufacturers identify the tile grade on the packaging, commonly as 1st Quality, A Quality, or A+ Quality. The grade should also match the quality declared on the manufacturer’s commercial invoice used for customs clearance.

Most information on a factory tile box is printed in relatively small lettering, but the quality grade is usually much more prominent. It is typically printed along the side of the box in large letters that can extend across much of the box width, making the grade easy to identify.

Once you’ve chosen the color and design, one of the most important things to check is the flatness of the tile. With a 48×48 tile, even a small amount of warping can make installation more difficult and increase the risk of uneven edges between tiles.

Check the shade code on every factory box. It is commonly identified with terms such as TONE or TONO, followed by a code or number. Depending on the manufacturer, the shade code may be printed directly on the box or shown on a factory label or sticker
